How GPA Works
GPA, CGPA, and SGPA are three related but distinct metrics. SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures performance for a single semester by dividing the sum of (grade points x credits) by total credits that semester. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) extends this across all completed semesters, weighting each semester by its credit load. GPA in the US context usually means the same as CGPA — a running average from enrollment through the current term.
The credit-weighting formula is: GPA = sum(grade_points x credits) / sum(credits). A course worth 4 credits has twice the impact on your GPA as a 2-credit course with the same grade. This is why failing a high-credit core subject damages GPA more than failing a 1-credit elective.
The 4-point scale (US) maps A to 4.0, B to 3.0, C to 2.0, D to 1.0, and F to 0. The 10-point scale (India) maps O (Outstanding) to 10, A+ to 9, A to 8, and so on down to F at 0. Weighted GPA adds bonus points — typically 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB courses — so the scale extends to 5.0 rather than 4.0.
Unweighted GPA treats all courses equally regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA rewards students who take harder courses. Colleges in the US consider both: unweighted for baseline comparison, weighted to assess course rigor.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is typically calculated for a single semester, while CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the average of all semesters combined. GPA measures short-term performance; CGPA reflects your overall academic standing.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
The formula depends on your university. Most Indian universities use: Percentage = CGPA x 9.5. VTU uses a different multiplier. Use the CGPA to Percentage calculator on this site for your specific institution.
Is this calculator free to use?
Yes, all calculators on GradeSnap are completely free. No account, no payment, no installation required.
Does GradeSnap support international university scales?
Yes. GradeSnap supports the US 4.0 scale, Indian 10-point scale, and university-specific presets for SRM, VTU, Anna University, IIT, Delhi University, Mumbai University, JNTUH, University of Toronto, MGU, and IGNOU.
Can I use this for high school GPA?
Yes. The Weighted GPA calculator supports AP, IB, and Honors course bonuses on a 5.0 scale. There is also a dedicated High School GPA calculator.
Is the calculation accurate compared to my official transcript?
The calculators use the standard credit-weighted average formula. Results match official transcripts when you enter the same grades and credits. Rounding rules may differ slightly between institutions.
